Flash fiction is a writing style that stresses extreme brevity. These types of stories can be anywhere from 100-1500 words. This style works very well for Currey's "Fatal Light". The author uses brief chapters to describe to the readers his wartime experiences in a manner that refuses to beat around the bush. Despite the short structure, Currey still manages to describe his trials vividly.
I think this structure fits well with the ideas in this novel. The nature of war is living in moments. As a soldier, you live for the moment because death is always around the bend. The short bursts of livelihood that this flash fiction novel throws at the audience make for a very realistic depiction. Also, this style of writing leaves no room for anything that is not absolutely necessary, ensuring that every word is adding something to the story. The flash fiction format is a great way to tell the tale of war, especially from the eyes of Richard Currey.
