The film Indochine focuses on the colonial period of Vietnam when Frace was in control. It shows the extreme difference between the Frenchmen and the native Vietnamese people.

Eliane's relationship with her plantation workers shows the relationship France had with Vietnam. It is a parent and child relationship with Eliane portrayign the parent. In one scene she beats a worker and says that she does not like to beat her own children. This is how the FRench controlled Vietnam. They were ruthless and brutal, but would try and look as nice and polite as possible. They wanted the world to think they were doing the Vietnam good but in reality they were tricking the Vietnam people into slave labor. In another scene a naval officer explains to Jean-Baptiste how the workers and so tired and hungry that they will volunteer to go to plantations basically as slaves just so they will have something to eat.

Eliane's life also symbolizes the chaos that became of France's control over Vietnam. Just like with Eliane and Jean-Baptiste, France could no longer treat the people of Vietnam with no respect. The people wouldn't let their family, friends, and fellow countrymen being killed and beaten. They rebelled just as Jean-Baptiste did when he went to the party as Camille's date only to be kicked out by Eliane. This movie is a good representation of the type of events that lead up to Vietnam rebellion.
