In the first hour of the movie "The Deer Hunter" it shows the lives of three characters and how it was prior the war. The three characters are Michael who is the most serious out of the three men and has a leadership role in the movie. Steven is a passionate man who holds himself to high standards and Nick is the quiet one. The movie shows how these three characters respond knowing what they have to leave behind as they go off to war. They come to a realization that the next days are not promised so they have to make the best of the days they got. Life never becomes the same for these men but they make the best of it through parties and drinking before their lives are changed forever.

While the men are hanging out in the bar drunk, a soldier who just got back from the vietnam war comes in. The men ask them how is it down over there in the war but the man doesnt respond to Mike and the other soldiers who are asking him questions. He continues to ignore them so the men continue to ask him questions. He finally answered "Fuck em". This comment made Mike upset making him want to fight the soldier but his friends but his friends stop him from doing it. This shows how much the war has affected all the soldiers in the bar.

The war has tramatized all three characters making them completely different when they end up coming back home. Mike doesnt even show up in his welcome back party because he feels bad for leaving his friends and family behind to go to the war.He passes the house and tells the taxi driver to just go towards the highway. When Mike and his friends go Deer hunting he intentionally misses and lets the Deer go off running. He does this because he realizes the power such a weapon can hold. The power of life and death and this is things that Mike doesnt want to experience again. When Stanley is playing with his gun, he doesn't realize that it is loaded and Mike then takes it away from him. This leads to a game of russian roulette. This symbolizes how much Mike and Nick dont care about their lives anymore that they are willing to risk it through chance. Nick is forever changed mentally that when he ask Mike does he no who he is, Mike feels the need to say no. He is always looking scared and is tatooed with scars from the war. These men are playing with gun's shooting at one another.

The first hour of this movie, the characters are introduced. They are home and they are young and brash, playing pool, drinking, and hunting. Stephans and Angela's wedding scene is very important telling of what is important to the men. Everyone runs around to get things ready for the wedding. All goes well in the wedding until we get a little bit of foreshadowing.
